From Tim McCormack

Those of you writing about gender and sports for your projects should definitely read this article.  An international perspective might be a good thing to add to any project.

  1. I find it ridiculous how Saudi Arabia forbids physical activities (sports) for women in state-run schools. I believe it all has to do with religion and that goes to show the power and impact it has over a society. Not permitting women to represent Saudi Arabia in international athletic competitions exemplifies the unequal rights for woman. In the New York Times article Zoepf said “Although Saudi Arabia sent an official delegation of male athletes to Singapore for the Youth Olympics, Ms. Malhas — the daughter of an accomplished female show jumper, Arwa Mutabagani — had to enter on her own, at her own expense”. This completely goes against Title Nine and its effect in the U.S. It also goes to show the ambition woman athletes have to be able to compete and prove their skills. I think the campaign “No Woman No Play” is only the beginning and these equal rights will soon be achieved.
